We understand that things happen that are out of your control. If you cancel with more than 30 days notice we will refund your deposit. If it is less than 30 days but we fill your spot then we will give a refund. We will also refund for bad weather and ship changes out of your control. If you wake up with a hangover or just don’t feel like coming….we’ll keep your money!
Alaska weather is all over the place! Rain, shine, in the 50’s, in the 80’s….you name it, we got it! We recommend dressing in comfortable layers and have some wind and rain protection. This is for everywhere up here not just chartering with us.
If you have spent any time on the back deck of a fishing boat then you know that some days are hotter than others. We will catch anywhere from 0-20 fish on a 4 hour charter, the bulk of which are king salmon of all sizes. We have 10 years experience chartering in this area and know all the tricks. If the fish are biting, rest assured, we’ll catch them!
We like catching fish not just telling fish stories. Over the last 10 years fishing up here we have found the optimal number of poles to run is no more than 4. More lines in the water leads to more tangles and chaos when we get a fish on which ultimately leads to less time fishing and more fish lost.
We will run 2-4 poles depending on the fishing, weather and our guests on board. If you book a private than the rotation is ultimately up to you. If there are multiple parties on board then we suggest 15 min rotations on the poles so everyone has ample fishing time but also has “off” time to be able to enjoy the snacks, stories and views from the top deck.
The short answer is No. Our primary targets are king salmon which have been on catch and release since 2017. We rarely catch other species of salmon in summer months and the cost of shipping makes it not worth shipping smaller fish like pink salmon and dolly varden.
Most fishing boats in Alaska can only bring 6 people but our new boat the Carpe Diem can accommodate up to 10 guests. This makes us the perfect option for bigger families and friend groups. If you are a smaller group of 6 or less we still encourage you to consider booking a private charter. Treat yourself! Here is why…
A private charter means that your party in the only one on board and we can focus just on you!
No need to share poles with another party. Come feel comfortable being yourselves and enjoy the intimacy of being surrounded by just your loved ones in such beautiful surroundings. Private charters also include a breakfast pasty spread, locally smoked sockeye salmon spread, steamed dungeness crab as well as all the regular snacks and drinks.
We are excited that our new fast boat, the Carpe Diem, gives us the flexibility to be able to come to Skagway if necessary but we live in Haines and usually have our Skagway guests come to Haines on the fast ferry. The fast ferry is an enjoyable 45 min ride. There is no extra charge. Heather will handle the reservations, logistics and payment. Just think of it as a free bonus!
During the charter we are always looking for sea lions, seals, porpoises and birds including eagles, scoters, myrelets, pigeon guillemots amongst others. We occasionally also see humpbacks (especially earlier in the season) and orca. The Haines and Skagway area is known to have some of the most beautiful and dramatic landscapes in the Inside Passage. The sheer cliffs and relatively narrow Lynn Canal makes for a stunning back-drop for your fishing or scenic wildlife charter.
